9 Adsense Tricks

Adsense Trick 1

This Adsense trick might even be bordering on Adwords trick territory, but here goes anyway. When you create an Adwords advert, you can specify what URLs you want your ad to appear on in the content network. In other words, if you know of a very popular site in your niche, you could try and direct some of its traffic to your site by specifying that your ad will appear on that site only. Your advert will appear as typical Adsense that visitors can click on and for which the owner of that site will get paid. Yes, you will be paying your competitor for clicks on your ads, but it may be worth it for the gain in traffic you experience.

You may have seen the infamous “Are you sick of Digitalpoint forums” advert that was targeted to appear on none other than Digitalpoint pages. Whilst there is heated debate over the ethics of such marketing strategies (some call it too aggressive), there is no doubt that it created huge publicity for Wickedfire.

I’ve seen less controversial example of this kind of URL targeting in the appearance of John Chow’s adverts on webmaster-talk, also.

Adsense Trick 2
The above Adsense trick is but one side of the coin. The other side of the coin is the ability to prevent adverts for certain URLs from appearing on your pages. Simply collect a list of offending URLs and enter them in the Adsense Competitive Ad Filter. If no display/destination URL is apparent on the advert, you may need to download and install the Google Adsense preview tool. Once the URL is in the Competitive Ad Filter, adverts for it will no longer appear.

Adsense Trick 3
This Adsense trick is all about the blending of your adverts. As a general rule, Adsense that sticks out like a sore thumb is a Bad Thing. Vistors will usually not click on these ads. Whilst blending the display of the adverts will go some way to giving your whole page a more coherent look and feel, some Adsense publishers go further and disguise their Adsense as navigational links. They do this by doing the following:

* adopting the same styles for the Adsense that are used for other links on the page. This means using the same font, colour, weight, underline etc.
* making the background of the Adsense the same colour as the background of the page.
* making the border the same colour as the page.

Adsense Trick 4
This technique is at the other end of the spectrum to blending adsense: draw the viewer’s attention to the adverts by decorating them. I’ve seen different variations of this method. There is the plain old “look at this” graphic, similar to that seen on the Adsense here. Then there are the more elaborate designs that make it look like the Adsense is actually a part of the image. If you look closely, there is an example of decorated Adsense on this page.

Adsense Trick 5
Use “images only” as the format of your Adsense. Often, when you select Text and image ads for your ad unit, you will get text ads displayed, making the image variety a novelty. Adding image ads to your pages can brighten them up and take the place of graphics you would otherwise add. The only problem with selecting image ads only is that you are then narrowing down the list of advertisers who will display their ad on your site. It could be that there are only one or two advertisers that use this formart – or sometimes none. The best thing to do is try it out and check that you get a good variety of adverts displayed.

Adsense Trick 6
Use link units. This is the forgotten format for Adsense. Link units can blend seemlessly into your page content. Always, the trick is to test, test and test some more. Many use link units because they can be confused with menu navigation, and others even manipulate their navigational links to look like Adsense link units.

Adsense Trick 7
If you create a new colour scheme for your Adsense, save it. This means that you can use it again later, without having to go through the whole rigmarole of determining what colours to use. Even if you think you’ll never use the colour scheme again – save it anyway, just to be on the safe side.

Adsense Trick 8
Always, always, always use different channels for your different websites. If you are trying to sell a websites whose revenue comes from Adsense, interested bidders will insist on you breaking down Adsense figures by channel so that they can know for sure just how much is attributable to the site being sold.

Additionally, it will help you assess how well each of your ad units is performing. If you aren’t monitoring performance, you won’t be able to improve it effectively.

Adsense Trick 9
All those hypnotherapists or salespeople out there will be familiar with the “yes set”. Establish a pattern where the customer gets into the habit of saying “yes”, and then pop the all important question (whatever that may be). The theory is that because the customer has already established the habit of saying “yes”, they are more likely to continue. This Adsense trick establishes a pattern in a similar way, and I’ve seen it used only rarely.

What some publishers do is present a sequence of thumbnail images on their page that are so small that the viewer has to click on them to view the larger version of the image. After the “click to enlarge” habit is firmly installed, the viewer is a little click happy by the time they reach the publisher’s strategically placed image Adsense.

Blackberry Onyx is equipped with 512 MHz processor, 256 MB ROM and 128 RAM and 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera and image stabilization.

Onyx or another name of this 9700 series, reportedly has a network supporting Quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE with UMTS / HSDPA. Not only that, Internet data access facilities such as Wi-Fi will also be included. Bluetooth likewise not miss immersed in it. Onyx is also said to have installed the BlackBerry mobile applications App World, including online store Amazone for fast-track MP3 download music files, and TeleNav GPS navigation.
With so many existing and upcoming BlackBerry device models that look similar (yet different), it's becoming a bit confusing to differentiate at a glance between models. We have an upcoming article with our theory behind RIM's multiple device strategy, but in the meantime the big thing to note about Onyx is that's unassuming and slick form factor packs a ton of punch:

Tiger Wood Scandals

Perhaps he didn't notice the SUV parked across the road. If he did, he wasn't troubled by its blacked-out windows or any nagging hint of familiarity about its presence. In fact, if Tiger Woods thought so much as twice about what he was doing, then Mindy Lawton had no inkling of it as they enjoyed a secret assignation in Tiger's Cadillac Escalade 4x4 in a church car park soon after daybreak during a Florida spring.

But every move of that alfresco encounter was recorded by a surveillance team of reporters and photographers from one of America's biggest-selling tabloid magazines. It was a scoop - the first example of what we now know to be a pattern of infidelity on Tiger's part.

And it was two years ago - two years before the 'outing' of nightclub hostess Rachel Uchitel and the bizarre late-night car crash outside Tiger's Florida home that set in motion a chain of revelations. Yet during those intervening years, Tiger had seemed what Tiger always seemed - a family man: the ultimate professional, controlled, focused, even a bit dull - because this was a sting that, were it not for last week's ructions, would never have seen the light of day.

Tiger's management made sure of that. Today, for the first time, The Mail on Sunday can tell the story of the affair that preceded that car park encounter in 2007 and the desperate cover-up that ensued.

It is a story that goes a long way to answering two of the most persistent questions in the whole Tiger Woods scandal: why did a man whose massive earnings depended on him being the ultimate clean-living sportsman jeopardise everything, from career to family, with such apparent recklessness? And how did he get away with it for so long?

Today, Mindy Lawton, 34, knows that she was just one of many mistresses taken by the golfer. But, according to her family, throughout their 14-month affair she laboured under the delusion that what she had with Tiger was special and that they were in love.

Mindy's sister, Orlando primary school teacher Lynn Lawton, said: 'She is extremely, extremely naive, my sister. She is single, never married, never had children and still looking for a relationship. I have to hand it to him. It was brilliant to choose my sister to play his kind of game.'

The unworldly Mindy was easily dazzled and undemanding. She and Tiger met in summer 2006, when Mindy was working as an $8-an-hour manager and waitress at Perkins, a diner only a short drive from Tiger's home in the upmarket Orlando suburb of Windermere. Tiger and his wife Elin would regularly take breakfast there.

Lynn recalled: 'My sister told me they came in regularly. Elin would read the paper while Tiger ogled my sister. She is very bubbly, very outgoing. You couldn't help but notice her, even when she was in her waitress uniform.

'Mindy said he and Elin seemed disconnected. There would not be much conversation. Tiger would just sit there, looking at Mindy. She said, "Oh my God, he is so cute!"

'She doesn't know much about golf, but she did know he was married because Elin was sitting there.'

One day, Lynn said, Mindy called in a state of excitement: 'She said he had called her at Perkins and said, "This is Tige," - that's the pet name he always used for himself - "Will you meet me at the Blue Martini?"

'She was very excited but nervous so she asked our next oldest sister, Bobbi, to go with her. She was like, "Oh, I'm going to hang out with Tiger!"'

It is now known that this nightclub and cocktail bar was a favourite haunt of Tiger's - a place where he could entertain, and be entertained, in the relative privacy of the club's VIP section, surrounded by girls, minders and selected male friends.

Again, it is striking how relatively little effort he seemed to make to conceal these clandestine meetings. But, as Mindy was to find out, Tiger's powerful entourage and management were masters in protecting their money-maker's image.

At first, according to Lynn, the bouncer wouldn't let Mindy and her sister into the VIP room. 'They stood there for a while and then all of a sudden, Tiger nods to the guy to let them in. Tiger didn't get up. He just sat there.

'He was with a group of Orlando and Los Angeles basketball players. Bobbi bought him a drink and had one of the bartenders take it over. She said Mindy started dancing with another girl. My sister is a real good dancer and Bobbi said Tiger couldn't keep his eyes off her.'

Tiger and Mindy left the club separately. Mindy drove her sister home then met Tiger on his way to his house. She followed the golfer, driving at a discreet distance, and at the gated development was waved in by the guard.

Lynn said: 'Mindy told me the next day, "We went to his house and had sex. He was extremely good."'

Lynn thinks Elin was out of the country that night. She said: 'That was always the pattern. Mindy would drive her old Saturn car and follow Tiger in his luxurious Escalade.

'My sister was just a little girl on an hourly wage at Perkins. We knew what he wanted her for. But she wouldn't believe it.

'Maybe Tiger thought the security guards would think she was his cleaning lady,' Lynn conjectured. Or maybe they had just seen it all before and knew to turn a blind eye.

Truth be told, however charming and cool Tiger appeared as he sat over his breakfast, there was a different side to him, one only now emerging, which his young wife Elin must surely have been aware of.

As early as 2001, there had been hints of a wilder side to the sportsman when he went on holiday with a group of friends, reputedly calling themselves The Brothers and consisting of basketball players Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley and former professional footballer, Ahmad Rashad.

Together with baseball's most expensive player Alex Rodriguez, they travelled to the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

Jordan gambled, placing up to $5,000 on a single card. Tiger showed his rebellious side, bleaching his hair blond. But that was before he met Elin, before they married in 2004 and before their children, daughter Sam Alexis, now two, and ten-month-old son Charlie, were born.

Once the affair between Tiger and Mindy started, it gathered momentum, with the couple meeting at his house for sex every two or three weeks. Incredibly, he continued to have breakfast at Perkins to the point where, Lynn said: 'Everyone was talking about it because he would wait for Mindy in his Escalade and then she would follow him in her car. He was so brazen it was incredible.

'Everyone in our family knew about it too. I remember one day we were all sitting on our back porch, my parents, my husband and Mindy, and we said, "Do you know he is married?" And she started crying and said yes.

'My husband told her, "The way he is behaving with you, behind his wife's back, I am sure he has a lady in every city."

'It got to the point where our neighbours and friends knew about it too. In a way it was quite clever, him being so open about it because we thought, "Maybe this is just how celebrities behave."

'I am sure Elin knew nothing about it, because she was never home when Mindy was there. But because Tiger was so complacent about it, it never would have occurred to anyone to tell her what was going on. He never said to my sister, "This has to be secret."'

Meanwhile, on the golfing circuit, Tiger's brilliance and sheer earning power meant that he never had to explain himself, or his behaviour, to anybody. However many rumours may have circulated, however uncouth some of his habits - such as spitting and swearing on the greens, and being churlish to caddies - his talent provided all the excuse, or shield he needed.

Tiger was so focused, nobody dared disturb him. At the major championships in Britain, he tended to rent houses rather than join other players at hotels, under the guise of maintaining his privacy. He allowed no visitors and, in recent years, his wife was, at best, an infrequent member of his tournament entourage.

On the course, he stared straight ahead, interacting with no one, except maybe his caddie. He demanded utter loyalty of his friends and the proximity of his management. He never divulged anything about himself and for years it was believed that, far from having something to hide, the former child-prodigy was frankly a little bit dull.

He said nothing, people thought, because he had nothing to say. It was as if he had picked up a golf club at the age of three and - save for the aberration that was his marriage - never showed any interest in picking anything, or anyone else up since.

This was the seemingly impervious image that won him deals with big names such as Nike, Gillette and Pepsi - endorsements that, should he be able to maintain them, could see his fortune increase six-fold to £3billion in the next ten years.

But Mindy - and the others - saw a very different Tiger. Lynn said: 'I saw the texts he sent her. One of them said he was dreaming of being inside of her. Another said, "Do you want to get laid?" It was crude. There was no mention of love. She said he didn't talk about his wife.'

Had Tiger mentioned Elin, it might have meant confronting the sordid reality that his 'romance' with Mindy was conducted while his wife was pregnant with their first child.

Instead, Lynn said: 'He talked very little about anything. She said he never wore condoms. That really broke me up. I was so worried she might catch a disease, especially as we suspected he was promiscuous. But Mindy was in love with him. I think she thought he was faithful to her.'

In fact, it seems likely that Tiger's affair with Mindy overlapped with his relationship with Jaimee Grubbs, the 24-year-old cocktail mistress he met in April 2007 and with whom he had a three-year affair. According to a source close to Jaimee, she very much enjoyed her affair with Tiger - perhaps having less romantic notions than Mindy.

Jaimee simply accepted that theirs was 'a physical, not a cerebral relationship'. She has said: 'Tiger might have started out naive, but sex became like an addiction to him.'

Jaimee has also claimed that the star took the painkiller Vicoden - a prescription he explained as necessary because of a recent knee injury.

Rachel Uchitel, the New York club hostess whose 'outing' as one of Tiger's mistresses supposedly led to last Saturday's marital meltdown, allegedly told one friend that Tiger took Ambien - a sedative prescribed for his insomnia but said to heighten sexual experiences.

Porn star Holly Sampson and marketing director Kalika Moquin, 33, both named as mistresses, do nothing to dispute these depictions of the man or his predilections.

Another as yet unnamed mistress believes: 'His big problem is, ironically, insecurity. He has never felt particularly attractive. From the age of four or five, he was destined to be a golfing legend but no one told him how to be a man.

'He married the dream girl, had the perfect family, but couldn't feel satisfied with that.

'He's not a happy man. When his father died [in May 2006] his moral compass went off. He was caught once and got away with it. He thought he could get away with it for ever.'

Which brings us back to that car park, that surveillance team in the spring of 2007 and the scoop that could have exploded Tiger's myth long before now. So what happened?

Put bluntly, Tiger sold himself to save himself - or at least his management did. With an exertion of power only possible by the very rich and very famous, a deal was struck.

In return for burying the story of Tiger's affair, he would give an exclusive cover interview to a men's health magazine owned by the same company as the tabloid.

According to our investigation, when 'Team Tiger' discovered that the tabloid magazine not only had blurry pictures of him and Mindy in the car park but evidence of the consummation, they went into a panic. Then they went to work.

Neal Boulton, an editor in the tabloid magazine's company at the time, revealed: 'They said, "What do we have to do not to let this get out?"'

The answer was press the magazine's publisher to withhold the story in return for Tiger appearing on the August 2007 cover of its stablemate publication, Men's Fitness. And so Tiger, who regularly declines interviews on the grounds that he is a 'private' person, struck beefcake-style poses and gave tips on diet, exercise and weightlifting.

According to Lynn, her sister had told her of 'a strange car following her at night'. Around the same time, Lynn herself received a call from a reporter at the tabloid. But then nothing came of it – or so the Lawton family thought. And as far as Mindy knew, Tiger simply dropped out of her life.

Lynn said: 'You'd have thought with all his money, he would have paid her off and all the other girls but I guess he thought he had them in the palm of his hand. He treated my sister like a piece of meat.'

Tiger ended his affair with Mindy as soon as his management informed him of the tabloid sting. He just stopped calling. For her, there was no explanation, for him there was no story - and that was what mattered.

In the final analysis, it was perhaps too much for Tiger's management to hope that all his 'Mindys' would go away. And, crucially, cracks were beginning to appear in the one thing upon which everything - his reputation and his shield - depended: Tiger's game.

At the Open at Turnberry in the summer, Tiger missed the halfway cut for only the second time in a major championship in his glittering career.

At the time, the golfing circuit was awash with rumours that he had returned to his rented house and taken out his frustrations on its interior, trashing the place to the tune of £6,000 to £16,000, depending on who one believes, though nothing was ever confirmed.

In recent months, talk of arguments with Elin and a recent ultimatum simply would not be silenced.

Perhaps when the Mindy problem went away, Tiger thought himself immune from exposure. He had been so blatant and emerged without a dent to his image. Perhaps he believed that his image was so artfully constructed that the truth just couldn't punch through it.

Perhaps he didn't think at all - a luxury afforded him by his wealth, his management and his power, and one which from here on in, he'll have to do without.

The stock market is trying to reconcile some disappointing retail sales and jobs data with the Federal Reserve’s more upbeat view of the economy. The major indexes wavered in early trading Thursday before moving modestly higher, tentatively extending the big rally that followed the Fed’s comments on Wednesday.

Falling retail sales chilled hopes the recession will end sooner rather than later. The Commerce Department said sales fell 0.1 percent in July, significantly worse than the 0.7 percent increase that was expected by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.

Results would have been even worse had it not been for a boost in auto sales thanks to the Cash for Clunkers autos trade-in program. Excluding autos, retail sales fell 0.6 percent, compared with expectations for a gain of 0.1 percent.

Retail sales are considered a strong indicator of economic recovery because consumer spending accounts for more than two-thirds of all economic activity.

“The data suggests the consumer sector is going to be hard to drag into the recovery,” said Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at CIBC World Markets. “It is common wisdom that that is the case, but this is a reminder to the markets that the average American is still burdened by too much debt and too weak job prospects.”

A weekly report on unemployment also came in worse than projected. The Labor Department said the number of newly laid-off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly to a seasonally adjusted 558,000, from 554,000 the previous week. Analysts were expecting new claims to drop to 545,000.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 13.00, or 0.1 percent, to 9,374.61 after rising 120 Wednesday in response to the Fed’s statement that the economy is “leveling out.”

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 3.40, or 0.3 percent, to 1,009.21, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 7.32, or 0.4 percent, to 2,006.04. About seven stocks rose for every six that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a very light 123.9 million shares.

In other trading, the Russell 2000 index of smaller companies slipped 0.01, or virtually unchanged, to 572.16. Gains in overseas markets and a better-than-expected earnings report from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. helped offset the day’s disappointing news.

Asian markets rose after the Fed’s statement, while European markets were boosted by new data showing recessions have ended in Germany and France. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart reported virtually flat second-quarter income compared with a year ago, but results exceeded Wall Street expectations.

The world’s largest retailer also raised the low end of its profit guidance, saying it expects shoppers to continue to be attracted by its low-priced items. Still, company officials warned that the economy will continue to remain difficult in the coming months.

In other economic data, a report showed businesses reduced inventories for a 10th straight month in June, although total business sales posted the first increase in nearly a year. An upgrade of Texas Instruments Inc.’s stock by Baird & Co. helped lift technology stocks.

Financials also moved mostly higher for a second straight day. Bond prices rose ahead of an auction of 30-year bonds. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, fell to 3.66 percent from 3.72 percent late Wednesday.

The surprise figures injected new life in a monthlong rally and provided validation for traders who have been betting since March that the economy is healing. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 114 points to cap its fourth straight weekly gain. The Dow is at its highest level since early November.

The government said employers shed 247,000 jobs in July, the fewest in a year. Economists had expected 320,000 lost jobs. The unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent from 9.5 percent in June, rather than rising to 9.6 percent as forecast.

“It really gave the market the proof that it needed to see,” said Burt White, chief investment officer at LPL Financial in Boston. The report is often the most anticipated bit of economic news each month on Wall Street and nervousness about what it would reveal held stocks to modest moves most of the week.

The exception came Monday when Ford Motor Co. said its monthly sales rose for the first time in nearly two years because the government’s cash for clunkers program was drawing customers. That, and good news about manufacturing, construction and banking, sent the Standard & Poor’s 500 index over 1,000 for the first time in nine months.

With the pop Friday, the S&P 500 index is up 14.9 percent in only four weeks and 49.4 percent from a 12-year low in early March. Still, some analysts say the gains have come too quickly and question whether an economic rebound can ever live up to the expectations investors are now setting.

“We’ve run very fast, very quickly,” said Marc Harris, co-head of global research for RBC Capital Markets in New York. “I think we’re due to take a breath.”

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow rose 113.81, or 1.2 percent, to 9,370.07. The broader S&P 500 index gained 13.40, or 1.3 percent, to 1,010.48, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 27.09, or 1.4 percent, to 2,000.25.

About 2,300 stocks rose on the New York Stock Exchange, while about 700 fell. Volume came to 1.5 billion shares, compared with 1.4 billion Thursday.

The electronics retailer said it will not honor the $9.99 price posted Wednesday morning on its Web site for a 52-inch Samsung flat-screen TV. By early afternoon, the TV was listed at $1,799.99, almost half off the original $3,399.99 price.

Bloggers and Twitterers lit up the Internet with posts about the offer, some insisting Best Buy must honor it, others making jokes.

Best Buy, based in Richfield, Minn., said it has corrected an online pricing error and will not honor the incorrect price. Orders made Wednesday morning at the incorrect price will be canceled and customers will receive refunds, the company said.

Best Buy did not immediately return a call for additional comment.Shares fell 27 cents to close at $36.50 Wednesday.

Google Sells Underperforming Radio Ad Business

Google Inc. has found a buyer for a radio advertising business it has abandoned as part of efforts to cut costs and jettison underperforming operations.

WideOrbit Inc., a privately held company that makes software for the broadcast TV and radio industries, said Wednesday it has agreed to buy Google’s technology for automating radio ad placement. The San Francisco-based company did not disclose financial details. It will inherit 3,600 customers and an undisclosed number of employees.

Meanwhile, Google said it is buying On2 Technologies Inc., a provider of digital video compression technology, giving the Internet search leader a way to cut costs for its popular video-sharing site YouTube.

Such compression is important given that YouTube users upload some 20 hours of footage per minute; by shrinking the files, YouTube needs to buy less bandwidth from Internet access providers. The all-stock deal is valued at $106.5 million and is expected to close in the fourth quarter.

Google’s departure from the radio business, announced in February, was the latest retreat for the online search company from its 3-year-old foray into traditional media. The Mountain View, California, company discontinued a similar ad selling business for newspapers this year after disappointing returns on the investment.

It is still trying to sell television ads that are targeted to viewers’ individual interests. NBC Universal, Bloomberg TV and Hallmark Channel have been among the networks participating in the television ad service, which Google started in 2007.

Emboldened by its dominance of the Internet ad market, Google expanded into broadcast radio three years ago with the purchase of dMarc Broadcasting Inc. for more than $100 million. The company could have had to pay an additional $1.1 billion if certain financial targets had been hit, but the push into radio evidently didn’t pay off.

Instead of trying to place ads on broadcast radio, Google said it will try to deploy some of the technology for audio streamed on the Internet, while shedding the operation that automated the placing of ads on broadcast radio.

The dMarc technology creates an automated platform that lets advertisers more easily schedule and deliver ads over radio and keep track of when they air. On the broadcaster side, the dMarc technology automatically schedules and places such advertising, helping stations minimize costs.

Google’s inability to diversify has left the company dependent on Internet advertising, which accounted for virtually all of its $21.8 billion in revenue last year. Even so, the company remains well positioned to grow for years to come because advertisers are expected to steadily increase their online spending to connect with customers migrating to the Internet from print publications, radio and TV.

An assistant to Urip, who was more commonly known as Mbah (Grandpa) Surip, that the 52-year-old reggae singer fainted on Sunday evening after arriving from Yogyakarta for a concert.

"Mbah Surip died after drinking iced water. It seems that the iced drink triggered his illness, causing him to suffer a stomachache and a fever," Farid explained.

Previously a street singer, Urip ammassed a total of Rp. 4.5 billion in royalties from cellular phone providers, which have been selling his hit single Tak Gendong (I carry you on my back) as a ringtone. He had traveled across the country for concerts.

He passed away before getting medical treatment at a police hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. His body was lied at the residence of Mamiek Prakoso, a popular artist, in Kampung Makasar, Jakarta.
